Mellophone Recordings

Mellophone, Don Elliott.

An old Bethlehem Records Jazz album, to my knowledge this is only available on vinyl and, to my knowledge, is the only album ever made to feature the Mellophone.  It pops up occasionally on eBay.

Mr. Elliott's ensemble features Bill Byers on Trombone, Danny Bank on Baritone Sax, Barry Galbraith on Guitar, Howie Reich on Trumpet, Hal McKusick on Alto Sax and Flute, Milt Hinton on Bass and Mel Zelnick on Drums.

The Paul Desmond Quartet featuring Don Elliott

This CD features two albums by the Paul Desmond Quintet and Quartet.  It's the Quartet part of the CD that features Don Elliott.  So, even though the album has 16 tracks, we'll only concern ourselves with tracks 9 - 16.

As much as we hear and read about Don Elliott and his mellophone abilities, the opportunities to actually hear it in action are rare.  There is a reason why he was the king of the Mellophone and this album gives proof.

Mosaic Select, Johnny Richards

From the Mosaic Select website:

Johnny Richards is best known as for his composing and arranging for Stan Kenton (most notably Cuban Fire) and for co-writing "Young At Heart." But Richards' talent went well beyond Kentonia and songwriting. As Victor Young's assistant at Paramount Studios, he learned the art of film scoring; under Arnold Schoenberg's tutelage, he acquired a taste for dissonance; his knowledge of and penchant for Latin rhythms came, no doubt, from his Mexican Heritage. When the jazz bug bit him in the '40s, he amalgamated all these properties into a unique musical language of his own.

This set celebrates his forgotten work of the '50s and '60s, beginning with the programmatic piece "Annontation Of The Muses" for nonet in 1955, issued briefly on a Legende 10" LP. His 1957-58 orchestra is represented by Wide Range and Experiments In Sound (Capitol) and The Rites Of Diablo (Roulette). Keeping an 18-piece band together proved daunting and the ensemble folded in 1960. Richards regrouped in 1964, long enough to produce My Fair Lady - My Way and Aqui Se Habla Espanol, both for Roulette.

These six outstanding albums, all on CD for the first time, capture every aspect of Richards' art. Soloists include Gene Quill, Clifford Jordan, Seldon Powell, Burt Collins, Ray Copeland, Marvin Stamm, Jimmy Cleveland, Bill Watrous and Hank Jones.

Hm ... they didn't mention Ray Starling.  This CD is truly all about Ray Starling. Practically every track is strong, and Starling's Mellophonium playing is nothing short of unbelievable.

Higher!, High Brass

According to their website:

High Brass is made up of twenty musicians with wide experience and acknowledgement in the field of jazz and Latin music, and are fortunate enough to find themselves with all the right ingredients to make a formidable big band. However, this is not a typical big band!

The look of the band, albeit impressive, is completely "off the wall". Gone are the traditional reed and trombone sections usually associated with this genre of music and in their place sit mellophonium and baritone horn sections respectively.

The result is a cross between Kenton and Drum Corps, which winds up being a totally exciting sound!

According to their website:

The most challenging and exciting project to date; this CD truly marks a “Time For A Change” for High Brass. Here the band have performed stunning charts written by Bob Curnow exclusively for High Brass and also integrated a fantastic rhythm section. This album once again demonstrates the determination to take the band to the next level and the desire to adapt and redefine the boundaries of big band jazz. All ten tracks on this album showcase stunning solos and an energy and musicianship that have helped develop the trademark sound of High Brass.

Brass Attitude, Brass Impact!

According to the liner notes:

Brass Impact! are one of Scotland's newest and most exciting jazz ensembles. Formed in November 2001 from what was a youth marching band for young people based in Renfrewshire, the band have made great strides in the mainstream jazz scene with their interpretation of modern day big band jazz.

BI! brings to big band jazz the sounds of unique instruments such as mellophones and forward facing baritones. Fuse these instruments with the group's driving rhythm section which includes Latin percussion and vibraphone, and complete it with the vocal talents of Lain Ewing, and you have an interpretation of big band the likes of which is rarely heard in mainstream jazz today.

All arrangements have been adapted for Brass Impact by Robert Steele.

Live & Swingin', Brass Impact!

With their second CD, Brass Impact cements themselves as a solid swing band. Once again, Robert Steele's arrangements are rock solid and the band combines that distinctive brass sound with genuine swing, even moreso than their first album which had a mix of styles.  This feat even makes the band truly unique.

On board are vocalists Pat Keating and Iain Ewing, who add to the overall style and feel of a big band concert.  Even the CD cover echoes of a Vegas Rat Pack show.  The band swings, the sound is powerful and the overall effect is awesome.

Mellophonium Magic, Stan Kenton and his Orchestra.

In September of 1961, John S. Wilson of the New York Times wrote the following:

KENTON ADDS 4 MELLOPHONIUMS . . . MORE BRASS. MORE MELLOW.

Stan Kenton, whose brassily bellicose bands have been challenging American eardrums for more than fifteen years, brought the latest edition of his orchestra to Basin Street East on Thursday night.

There are four more brass instruments than usual in this group, but Mr. Kenton has chosen them to serve as a mellowing, softening influence as well as to intensify the band's normally piercing brassiness.

The four added instruments are mellophoniums, mellophones whose tubing has been straightened out so that the bell points straight ahead like that of a trumpet instead of being directed back over the musician's shoulder. It was created several years ago by Don Elliott, a jazz mellophonist who had found that solos played on a regular mellophone could not be heard properly unless he played with his back toward his audience. Mr. Kenton added the unusual instruments to his orchestra last winter to remedy what he felt was 'a lack of tonal color' in its performance.

At first, he says, he had difficulty finding musicians who were willing to play the mellophonium. Trumpeters and French hornists, who were the logical choices, bridled at the suggestion that they switch to what they looked on as a freak instrument.

But, Mr. Kenton, who insists that the mellophonium is no freak and is here to stay as far as he is concerned, was persuasively persistent, and he now has a mellophonium section manned by two former trumpeters, one former French hornist and one mellophonist who had to be weaned away from his past habit of using a trumpet mouthpiece.

Playing as a section, the mellophoniums frequently sound like muted trumpets with a slightly darker tone. They can also create the distant, haunting sound of French horns (Mr. Kenton chose them in preference to French horns, because, he says, they are capable of a stronger attack than the French horn). Both aspects enable the current Kenton band to play slow, moody numbers with a richer, more lustrous voicing than it has had in the recent past.

But when Mr. Kenton lets all the stops out, the mellophoniums also add a full share to the pandemonium, sailing with surprising agility around and over the trumpets and trombones like exultant Valkyries. Their presence gives the Kenton band more scope and balance than it has had for years.

Adventures in Time: A Concerto for Orchestra, Stan Kenton and his Orchestra.

As per William Grim:

One of the most interesting aspects of Adventures in Time is that it is one of the first instances of a jazz recording made employing unusual time signatures (for jazz, that is), such as 5/4, 9/8, 6/8 and 7/4. Four musicians provide the bulk of the solos: Gabe Baltazar on alto sax, Don Menza on tenor, Marv Stamm on trumpet and Ray Starling on mellophonium.

Ray Starling is one of the most underappreciated figures in jazz. A musician of incredible subtlety and invention, he made the unwieldy (and intonationally suspect) mellophonium do things that one would have thought impossible. In the laconic "Artemis and Apollo," Starling delivers a solo as movingly beautiful and powerful as anything ever recorded by Freddie Hubbard.
